Soil Science Society of America Announces 2020 Award
MADISON, WI, Jul 04, 2020 – The Soil Science Society of America (SSSA)
announces the following 2020 award recipient. The annual awards are presented for
outstanding contributions to agronomy through education, national and international
service, and research.
M. Francesca Cotrufo, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO – Soil Science Research Award: Francesca Cotrufo is
Professor at the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, and Senior Scientist at the Natural Resource Ecology
Laboratory, at Colorado State University. She earned B.Sc. from the University of Naples, Italy and Ph.D. from
Lancaster University, UK. Dr. Cotrufo is internationally recognized as an authority in the field of litter decomposition and
soil organic matter dynamics, and in the use of isotopic methodologies in these studies. Her main research interest is in
understanding the mechanisms and drivers of formation and persistence of soil organic matter, and its response to
global environmental changes and disturbances. She also pursues applied research to propose management practices
that increase soil health and mitigate climate change. She is subject editor of the journal Global Change Biology. To
date she has published over 120 peer reviewed articles and several book chapters. She was the 2019 Nutrien
Distinguished Scholar of Agricultural Sciences.
Soil Science Research Award
This award is presented to recognize outstanding research contributions in soil science. The award consists of a
certificate, a complimentary ticket to the award ceremony, and $2,000.
